You Are Invited

Artwalk 2011 will take place Friday, September 9 from 5-10 pm and Saturday, September 10 from noon-6 p.m. in Birmingham’s historic loft district on Morris, 1st and 2nd Avenues North between 22nd and 25th Streets.

Be sure you don’t miss out on the Artwalk After Party on Saturday from 7-11 p.m. at Sloss Furnaces, open to the public for the first time to celebrate 10 years of art and entertainment in downtown Birmingham. Here is a quick guide for enjoying one of the best weekends Birmingham has to offer.

  The Artwalk Experience

Put on your walking shoes and be prepared to experience a transformed downtown. Ten years ago, a small group of artists, residents and businesses in the Historic Loft District came together with a good idea – to showcase local art in a way that encouraged people to experience downtown Birmingham in a new and exciting way.

With the support of a few visionary investors, Artwalk was born. The first year featured less than 60 artists in a handful of locations. A decade later, Artwalk has grown into a popular destination street festival showcasing more than 120 artists throughout a vibrant neighborhood of residential, retail and entertainment establishments.

  The Artists

More than 125 local and regional artists in all mediums will move in to more than 40 businesses and lofts for Friday and Saturday. Paintings, ceramics, photographs, sculpture, jewelry and more will all be for sale. Several outdoor areas on Morris and 2nd Avenues will also feature artists.

Be sure to visit some of our veteran artists that have exhibited for seven or more years: Su Abbott, Rebecca Bach, Liesa Cole & Tony Rodio, Lane Finch, Jeanne Flint, Philip Griffith, Jill Marlar, David Self, Veronique Vanblaere, and Paul Cordes Wilm. Plus you’ll see more than 40 artists that will be showing with us for the first time!

  The Neighborhood

Walk along Morris Avenue, 1st Avenue North, and 2nd Avenue North between 22nd and 25th Streets to see 45 artist hosts, galleries, restaurants, and bars to visit.

This show could not happen without the support of ALL of our hosts. Check out the Artwalk 2011 Map to get acquainted with the festival footprint. Several locations have been a mainstay in the neighborhood for the past several years, including Lindsey Office Furnishings, Das Haus, Space One Eleven, Omni Studio, Metro Bar, Philip Griffith Photography Studio, Wooster Lofts, William Dawson, Atty, Liberty House Lofts, The Literacy Council, Bancography, WS Mercantile Condos and Erdreich Architecture.

In the ten years since Artwalk began we have seen tremendous growth of businesses including both retail and residential including What’s on 2nd?, AC Legg Lofts, The Avenues, Black & White, Rogue Tavern, Urban Standard, 2nd Row Studio, Pale Eddies Pour House, The Wine Loft, Matthew’s Bar & Grill, The M Lounge, Sidewalk Film Festival Office, Charm, Freshwater Land Trust, Faith Skate Supply, and Weld for Birmingham.
