Alex McClurg is a third year art student attending the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where his mixed media artwork is advancing in both aesthetics and process. The main focus of his work addresses the ideologies of Catholicism/Christianity and their relationship with cultural perspective of rituals, methodologies used to enthrall children and the consumption of a human beings life. The strong and sometimes controversial message behind his work is presented in a subtle manner by utilizing found articles and photographs to produce a sense of familiarity. Using imagery of children, he depicts childhood events that have affected him in his own life. A sense of nostalgia is created in his work by using such base materials as blue prints incorporated with additional found paper, to represent the structure of a household and church. Every article that is present in his pieces represents a certain feeling, memory or perspective. His compositions are intentionally ambivalent and created for interpretation on an individual basis.
