Cecily Chaney started making jewelry two years ago after shoulder surgery when her range of motion and strength were poor. She needed something to occupy her time and started experimenting with different techniques. Beginning with stringing she made colorful bracelets, necklaces and earrings. After learning some wire wrapping tips she incorporated wire designs into her stringing. She then moved on to seed beading, a tedious process using thread and very small glass beads. Next she enrolled in silversmithing classes and began producing basic cabochon type rings. With other classes in wire wrapping, cold fusion and hammering, she is now creating hammered cuffs and creative wire designs using natural gemstones and glass. She enjoys creating one of kind “conversation maker” pieces. Her work has been shown at the Birmingham Museum of Art Store, Lyda Rose Art Gallery and the Alabama Gem and Mineral Show. In April of 2009, she participated in her first juried show, Panolpy, in Huntsville, AL. A member of the Birmingham Art Association and Kentuck Museum Association, she is retired and serves as a substitute teacher and volunteer at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens and Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame. She lives in Gardendale, AL with her husband, Arthur.
