Jin H. Powell, a sculptor, graduated from the Central Institute of Fine Arts in Beijing, China, in 1985. After her graduation, she worked five years for the National Aviation Ministry in designing airport construction projects. She returned to the Central Institute of Fine Arts as a fellow and concentrated in large sculpture projects. Some of her works during this period include “The statue of General Chen Yi,” bronze, “Physicist Newton,” marble, and “The statue of Confucius,” marble.

 

In 1993, Jin entered Johnson Atelier Technical Institute of Sculpture in New Jersey to study casting and fabrication bronze sculpture.  During her study, she participated in the Construction of “Korea War Memorial” and “Washington Crossing Delaware River.” In 1995, she was invited to Sweden for an international sculpture competition and her work received high remarks by international collectors.

 

In 1995, she entered the Memphis College of Art as a graduate student. A year later, she and her husband John Powell, started their own casting and fabrication sculpture studio, ICON ATELIER, INC. Some of their works include “Burning Bush,” bronze, 10 ft. for the Solomon Schechter Day School of Memphis. In 1998, they were chosen by the State of Tennessee Art Commission to design and construct “14th and 15th Amendment,” a bronze bas-relief 88”xs50”x6” sculpture to display in the lobby of the State Capital Building in Nashville. Other sculptures over the next ten years include commissions for Idlewild Presbyterian Church, Memphis, TN; Adams Estate Sculpture Garden, Leechville, AR; City of Memphis, Memphis TN; First Pentecostal Church, North Little Rock, AR; Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, Nashville, TN; St. John’s Cemetery, Memphis, TN; St. Bernards Birthcare Center, Jonesboro, AR; and the Confucius Institute of The University of Memphis, Memphis, TN.
