As a student of many art forms, currently I am a double major in journalism and studio art-photography at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). My art background goes back to simply drawing and taking pictures of feet because I was the shortest child to my present state of weaving between aperture and shutter settings. Possibly for the best, I have no particular style that I can point to as my concrete style as I prefer artistic change and development, but portraits, documentations, and large scroll like hand made photographic transfers are my passions. Currently my passions have pushed me to exploring many ideas of pain, debt, love, sexual bondage and remembrance through various styles. Specifically the transformative properties of plastic wrap on individuals and the white hooded black man series are the two series pushing my explorations.
Documenting people has been in my blood since I got my first camera as a young boy. I have an appreciation for the cameras power to stop time, recall forgotten moments and to predict future events. Though styles and techniques change constantly in photography my main constant has been giving people a chance to feel special or cared for through the capturing of who they are in particular moments. A fascination with how I present various emotions, or lack of emotions, gives me that special feeling when I step behind my camera and into various situations.
Fortunately once I have taken a picture my process has not ended but just started. Usually instead of using a picture as it is or working it over in Photoshop, I try to think about how the image might become stronger through transfer methods such as chemical transfer, iron-on transfer and image to surface transfer on raw canvas to name a few. Simply, I have found that once I find the best method to present a picture I have given myself as well as others a chance to witness an image in a space possibly better suited for display than the common frame or shoe box. I do however love the elegant simplicity that I can find with some framed portraits.
