Painting [Hoover, AL]

[Artwalk Location]

2223 1st Avenue North: Lindsey Office Furnishings

I paint because I take great pleasure in life.  I gain my inspiration from nature because I am constantly amazed at the circle of life, growth, death, and rebirth.

Since graduating from Birmingham-Southern College in 1996, I have worked for the Jefferson County Coroner/Medical Examiner’s Office performing autopsies.  After 13 years of examining people whose lives have been cut short (homicides, suicides, accidents, etc.), I have come to appreciate the simple pleasures in life:  fresh air, sunshine, gardens, dining, family, friends.  As a result of spending time with death all day, I spend my off time sewing seeds in my organic vegetable garden and communing with nature.  I watch and photograph the various daily changes in the seasons’ harvest along with the insects that busy themselves with their daily chores.  My art is a direct projection of my time with nature and respect for the earth through tending the soil.

I have painted with oil for numerous years and have recently added acrylics to my palate.  As of late, I have also added the technique of painting with a palate knife.  I am an emerging artist and have been invited to my first public showing, September 11-12, 2009 at ArtWalk in my hometown of Birmingham, Alabama.
