The works of Kate Merritt Davis are largely mixed media with a heavy dose of paint. Working with paints, pastels, wax and graphite on canvas, wood or paper, she creates unique windows into her life, thoughts, and experiences. Using resources in this manner allows for an unrehearsed visual record of her observations.

Though her processes may seem chaotic at first glance, the peacefulness and meditative qualities of her creative sessions become apparent as the viewer unfolds landscapes, color fields, and linear rhythms. As she places her paint brushes to each piece, or reaches for a pastel or piece of graphite, the significance of each drip and well-placed line is considered, further engaging her imagination. In the air between the artist and her work is an awareness that as she is creating, so is she being directed.

Each work is a narrative- a piece of rambling prose written in color. As the artist translates her life to the surface before her, she notes the situations, moods, and thoughts which have crossed paths with each piece. The titles given to her works allude to this commentary, linking her experience and expression in a way that can be contemplated by the viewer.

Kate studied Fine Arts at the University of Montevallo, where she received her BFA in 2000. She currently paints out of her home studio in Irondale, Alabama, while also showing locally, taking commissions for other creative works and contributing her art to community fundraisers.. Kate notes a deep appreciation for the works of such artists as Cy Twombly, Joan Mitchell,  and Odilon Redon among a variety of others.
