Creating contemporary interpretations of the nostalgic, timeless, and classical institutions of American life. This best describes the fine art photography and craft of Ken Gables Photography. Photo-graphy literally means to write with light and Ken has chosen to subtitle his work with this phrase, in that photographic images should tell a story of their own; a composition of light. Growing up in rural southern Missouri, where mountain springs, spillway dams, old mills and barns dot the landscape, Ken acquired a great appreciation for the pioneering culture that defines the Ozarks region. He went on to study geography, furthering his interest the historical landscape and earned a degree in Cartography from Missouri State University. He has since acquired a master’s degree and photography certificate from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Ken works locally, photographing Alabama and Southeastern landscape settings and contracting projects involving family photography and restoration.
Ken maintains complete control of the entire photographic process. He is primarily using digital means to capture and process images, but continues to use medium format film and traditional chemical based processing as situations present. Hand tinted fiber-based black and white photography remains a specialty. Ken personally performs all aspects of photographic image processing, printing, matting and framing, and issues only signed and numbered limited edition prints. His digital printing is entirely with archival pigment based inks (giclee), and he uses only conservation quality matting and presentation materials. Ken has also designed and personally crafts a line of hardwood frames specifically fashioned to compliment his style of photography.
