I first lived in Japan in the summer of 1984. As an exchange student, I lived in a small town not far from Kyoto. At Kansai Foreign Language University, I studied Japanese, Japanese Art History and Japanese Business. And I fell in love with Japan – its people, language, art, architecture, quirks and culture, especially its ancient capital, Kyoto. Through photography I try to share with friends here a fraction of what continues to make me smile, or wonder, at Japan.

I returned to Japan in 1990, this time as a freshly-minted attorney, but I didn’t practice law. I worked in a middle school, teaching English in a small town nestled in the arms of a tiny valley in the Southern Honshu. My fascination with photographing Japan continued. I practiced law in Tuscaloosa beginning in 1992… and plotted ways to fashion a career which would necessitate frequent trips back to Japan. In 1999, I returned to Japan for business and since have developed with and in Japan, traveling there 1-3 times a year. During these trips I always make time to seek out and photograph that rarely traveled street or scene…
