Artwalk 2012 Location: The M Lounge, 2209 1st Ave N

Michael Collins Dowd was born in Deactur, AL, but has resided in Birmingham since 1988. Being influenced by his father's and grandfather's artistic abilities, Michael was attracted to the arts at an early age. During his junior high/ highschool years he won a t-shirt design contest promoting reading, a national vocational poster design contest, and created the cover for the school's literary arts magazine. He graduated from Hewitt-Trussville High School in 1998 with a vocational diploma in commercial art. When not at school his time was spent listening to punk rock, reading comics, and silk-screening in a makeshift studio he crafted in his family's garage. Upon discovering Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant's book Subway Art on a discount book table, Michael was thrust headfirst in the world of street art.

Michael does not limit himself to one discipline and thus works primarily in mixed media. Whatever he can get his hands on: Spray paint, acrylics, watercolour, markers, silkscreen, stencils, shoe polish, dirt, etc. His recent works are aesthetically influenced by street art, Japanese candy packaging, comics, and early 80's video game graphics.

Michael usually creates works in series as one idea tends to form another. He does however on occasion create "one off" pieces as the mood hits.

Michael showed his series "Children of Aether” at Artwalk 2011.
